General guidance only — your contracts and the insurer's underwriting decide the final coverage.

How to use it

Answer the questions and you'll get a checklist of the coverage and bonds that typically apply to your business. It does not show prices — those depend on underwriting — but it tells you exactly what to ask for.

What the checklist is based on

The checklist uses CSLB requirements (the $25,000 bond, workers' comp rules by classification, and LLC insurance rules) plus the coverage most GC and owner contracts require. It is a starting point — your contracts, vehicles and operations decide the final program.

Coverage most contractors end up with

  • $25,000 contractor license bond
  • General liability, often $1M/$2M with completed operations
  • Workers' comp (required now for some classes; for all active licenses from January 1, 2028)
  • Commercial auto for business-titled vehicles
  • Tools and equipment coverage
  • Umbrella when contracts require higher limits
